Christopher J. Murphy III, executive chairman of 1st Source Bank, South Bend, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Notre Dame, his alma mater, at its 181st University Commencement Ceremony in May. Murphy was one of seven honorees recognized for their meaningful contributions to society, leadership and service.
Murphy holds a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame, an MBA from Harvard University and a juris doctorate from the University of Virginia.
His banking career spans over 60 years, starting with an internship at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency when he was 17, then 3.5 years at Citibank after completing his education. He then joined his father-in-law and a group of investors to buy what was then The First Bank and Trust Company of South Bend, now 1st Source Bank, serving as a mix of director, president and CEO of the bank and its holding company for 52 years. Under his leadership, 1st Source has grown from $220 million in total assets with nine banking centers to $9 billion with 78 locations.

Murphy has served on numerous local, regional and national for-profit and not-for-profit boards, including the Indiana Bankers Association, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2004 and 2024, and a IBA Leader in Banking Excellence – the Association’s highest honor – in 2025.
The University of Notre Dame awards honorary degrees to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and service, recognizing their contributions to society and alignment with the University’s mission and values.
