Gerald Armstrong passed away on March 27, 2025. He was 85 years old.

Armstrong worked in the banking industry for nearly 40 years, including serving as chair of the IBA in 1988-89. He started at Bentonville State Bank in 1964 (later acquired by U.S. Bank NA, Minneapolis), moving to Seymour National Bank in 1972, working his way up to serve as president and CEO until the institution merged with National City Bank, Cleveland (which would later merge into PNC Bank NA, Wilmington, Delaware). He moved to Home Federal Savings Bank (which would later merge into Old National Bank, Evansville) as executive vice president until his retirement in 2003.

Armstrong’s retirement was marked by an official proclamation by Mayor John Burkhart that July 2, 2003, was Gerald Armstrong Day in the city of Seymour. He was also a three-time recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash – once each under Govs. Orr, Bayh and Kernan.

Armstrong served as president of the Seymour Lions Club and volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club of Seymour, Jackson County United Fund, Jackson County Industrial Development Corporation and the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce, among other organizations. In addition to chairing the IBA, he served as the IBA representative to the American Bankers Association.

Armstrong earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati, was an alumnus of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed the Senior Board Officers Seminar at Harvard University.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah; their four children; six grandchildren; and a sister. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Seymour Noon Lions Club or Boys & Girls Club of Seymour.
