My IBA journey began in government affairs, working closely with legislative issues at the Statehouse. At the time, I expected that my career would follow the path of policy and lobbying. But as I spent more time with our members, I realized that what I truly enjoyed most wasn’t the legislative work—it was the relationships and the opportunity to bring people together.
That realization changed everything.
What began as a role I assumed would lead in one direction gradually evolved into a career I never expected but deeply valued. The reason was simple: the people. Over the years, I had the privilege of working alongside dedicated colleagues and getting to know members who care deeply about their communities and their profession. Being surrounded by that level of commitment and passion made the work incredibly meaningful.

A large part of my career centered on connecting people. I was fortunate to plan and grow the Mega Conference over many years, watching it become a vital opportunity for members to learn, share ideas, and form lasting relationships. I also enjoyed organizing the Annual Convention, including the theme parties—events where everyone could relax, laugh, and enjoy time together outside the meeting room. For me, these gatherings were never just about the agenda. My goal was always to create an atmosphere where every member felt welcomed, valued, and missed if absent. Seeing members reconnect year after year made all the planning worthwhile.
The relationships that developed through peer groups, board and committee meetings were especially meaningful. Those smaller settings created opportunities for deeper conversations, shared problem-solving, and lasting friendships that strengthened both individuals and their institutions.
As I step into retirement, I do so with deep gratitude—for the opportunities I’ve had, the trust placed in me, and the wonderful people I’ve worked alongside. Most of all, I cherish the friendships formed and the balanced family life this work allowed me to build. I look forward to the next chapter—traveling, new adventures, and time with family and friends.
When I first walked through the door at the IBA, I never imagined I would stay this long. Looking back now, I realize how fortunate I have been—not just for the career, but for the friendships and memories that came with it.
Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey. It has been an honor and a joy to be part of the IBA community, and I will always be grateful for the connections it made possible.
With sincere appreciation,
Chris
